Arthur Calvano

 
 

With a background in teaching, coaching, advising, interpreting, translating, and realty, Arthur Calvano brings a wide breadth of experience to the Advisory Board. As an educator, he has taught Spanish in the U.S. to nonnative, heritage, and native speakers as well as English as a Second Language to European and South American youngsters. For the past decade, Arthur has worked as a professional linguist specializing in medical, legal, business, and conference interpretation. His interpretation and translation assignments encompass topics in education, sports, law, finance, real estate, health care, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, emergency assessment, and the environment.

Arthur has broad experience teaching and advising young adults, in and out of the classroom. In his first two years teaching, he helped guide his high school alma mater through an arduous transition to a coeducational institution. He is familiar with a range of educational systems - private and public, day and boarding, religious and secular, all boys and coed. He has taught every level of high school Spanish and served as adjunct lecturer at the university level.

Arthur has always enjoyed working with student athletes. For several summers, Arthur directed the English language-learning component of a private program in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for Spanish, Colombian and Brazilian youngsters pursuing intercollegiate and professional participation in tennis, basketball, and golf. Besides coordinating instruction, he acted as key liaison to group leaders for emergencies and everyday matters affecting program success. He further recruited teachers, assessed and placed students, and ensured inclusion of local culture within the curriculum.

Arthur´s work as an interpreter began in the legal realm, where he gained significant exposure to the discrete stakeholders involved in judiciary settings. He is most at home, nonetheless, when 'brokering' for Latinos in situations where linguistic and cultural barriers often create difficulties. In critical care communication encounters in health care, he sees crucial the need to not only interpret and clarify spoken words but to recognize and read nonverbal cues for the benefit of patients and providers. His dedication to impart expertise and empathy in every situation is something that he views optimized in an environment based on trust.

Arthur has a deep family tie to the game of baseball and a compelling interest in helping Latino athletes attain excellence, on and off the diamond.

Arthur holds a Master of Liberal Arts (ALM) from Harvard, an M.A. from the Middlebury Language Schools and an A.B. from Holy Cross.
