Proposed Curriculum
Athletics:
Sports Training:
- Intensive sports specific training sessions (2 ½ hr. morning sessions)
- Weight/Cardio Training (three one-hour training sessions per week)
- Possible instruction in sports related career
Sports Nutrition:
- Proper nutrition for growing bodies
- Body re-building training
The academy will be able to take gifted baseball players and prepare them academically for the college classroom. The academic program will exceed the minimum requirements for college eligibility now required by the NCAA. "We not only want them to succeed in college, we want them to excel," says Charles Farrell.
Education:
Curriculum:
- Classes from 1:00-4:30pm (three one-hour classes each day)
- Mandatory study hours 6-8pm (Monday-Thursday; Sunday)
- Public Speaking
- Language instruction English/Spanish
Higher Education Preparation:
- Prep School/University preparation (NCAA International Student Academic Requirements*)
- Training and instruction on various standardized testing (TOEFL, SAT, ACT)
Life Skills:
- Life in the Big Leagues (cultural adaptation)
- Coping with media
- Life on the Road
- Money Management/Financial Planning
"As you can see, this doesn't prevent kids from becoming professional baseball players, and may even augment their chances," Farrell said. "But for those unable to pursue professional baseball, or who don't want to go that route, a college education is their option. And that education will make them capable and productive citizens the rest of their lives, hopeful contributing to making their country better."
Giving Back:
The Academy emphasizes the need to give back. In doing so, the academy runs under the philosophy that all of its attendees should seek opportunities to mentor other attendees and be involved in the surrounding community. Given this, all attendees of the 14-16 yr. old and the 16-18 yr. old programs will be assigned mentors and will be required to perform community service within the surrounding community.
